Located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, this colorful hotel designed by Alejandro Marranzini pays tribute to the region’s colonial past. The project is entitled Casas del XVI and it is said to “preserve the beauty of the colonial houses that make up the old town neighborhood, offering guests accommodations in individual houses each dating back to the earliest European settlers.” Consisting of twenty villas, the accommodation units display classic roman roofs and brick arches originally built in the Spanish Colonial era.
Exuding a fresh and vivid look, the interiors of the villas are fun to explore in detail: “With a focus on both preserving the original architecture and also celebrating the vibrant Dominican culture, the interior of each house is decorated according to a theme relating to Dominican culture and Spanish Colonial history. Featuring an eclectic mix of ancient artifacts, local artwork and handcrafted furniture, the cozy home interior enchants guests with its colonial charm.” Special attention was given to designing the outdoor area, where palm-trees shade lounge units, dining tables and a generously-sized pool. A small apartment can easily look cluttered. Storage is often limited, and items without a home end up in piles on the floor and every other surface. Visible storage solutions like boxes, jars and baskets often add to the clutter problem. The solution is hidden storage. Hiding life’s necessities behind doors or other clever cover-ups gives your apartment a clean, minimalist feel. It also lets your favorite design elements — a sofa, a piece of art, a great view — be the star of the show.
These are the sleekest of the electric fireplaces on the market. Some have a backlit LED feature to outline the frame in light. Fairly easy to mount, they add a contemporary look to any room. If space is an issue, a multifunctional fireplace with media storage may be the perfect solution to not only warm up your space but also organize your entertainment system and components. The Delray model fits in a corner. If you want a small and simple free-standing electric fireplace, these selections are for you. Bonus category!
