Home Sweet Hotel. We can say that we’ve never seen that in kitschy cross stitch at any of the luxury hotels in the world, but it may be what you are thinking as your checkout date gets closer. So, forget the destination, the adventures, the cuisine—what is it about luxury hotel design that has us wishing we could change our address to theirs?

We aren’t talking about your standard, find them at every interstate off-ramp chain hotel (although those have their merits). There is something about an opulent hotel that is beyond exceptional, making us turn over our hard-earned dollars and contemplating how to extend our stay.

What is it about hotel design that has many of us so enchanted?

Luxury hotels use design to enchant you starting the moment you come onto their property. Nothing is haphazard in their space, except perhaps a weary traveller or two!

Grand entrances are a unifying feature across posh hotel brands and locations. From the groundskeeping on a sprawling property to the uniform of the door-person outside the most urban accommodations, your hotel is setting the stage for your stay before you even cross the threshold.

Once inside, the luxury hotel immerses you in grandeur that makes you feel both welcomed and reassured—sending the message that you couldn’t be spending your travel dollars in a better place. Fresh floral arrangements fill the air with their heavy scent, rich surfaces of stone and wood add warmth and luxury, and gleaming metal fixtures light your way into the pristine lobby. All of these features say, Welcome home!

The lobby is your arrival and departure point for your stay and the design of the space is carefully crafted to welcome you to your new temporary home—and inspire you to come back.

You’ve checked in and now make your way to your room where a sumptuous bed awaits to envelope you in blissful rest. Even though you may have the grandest of suites in a luxury hotel, it’s the enchanting place to rest your head that is most central to your stay.

At other lodging, a bed is just a bed, but in a luxury hotel, it truly is a place of dreams! High-end hotels utilize design teams to assemble a bed worthy of its patrons. Layering is key, with each piece being of the utmost quality and aesthetically pleasing.

Mattresses and mattress toppers lay the foundation for your peaceful rest, with high thread count sheets and perfectly insulating duvets or comforters added in. But what would a posh hotel bed be without pillows that invite you to snuggle in and relax? Firm or soft, down or alternative, upscale hotels offer a wide assortment of pillows for sleeping and add decorative pillows to boost the bed’s visual appeal.

With an indulgent robe and slippers already waiting for you and a chocolate on the pillow, you are ready to let the day’s events fall away as you drift off into a luxurious night of sleep.

Time to refresh after a long day of being a tourist or sitting through another meeting. Hotel design has you covered. In an upscale hotel your bathroom goes far beyond just being a bathroom. It is your own private spa and no detail is overlooked.

You may be welcomed into a serene area to find massaging jet sprays or a waterfall shower. The shower space in a luxe hotel bathroom is more than ample, allowing you to immerse yourself in the relaxing water instead of contorting yourself to stay in the line of weak water flow.

The experienced luxury traveller knows to expect dual sinks in the bathroom, along with oversized bathtubs, and towels that seem more like clouds of cotton. Even the provided toiletries reinforce the hotel’s glamorous image with top-shelf ingredients and artisan fragrances.

And let’s not forget the extra spa amenities available to guests. Every great hotel has a masseuse, and expert dermatologist on hand and at the ready.

Traveling is stressful, but the best hotels add both a human and technological touch to make your time more enjoyable. Personalization is a trademark of high-end hotels and the attention to detail makes you feel valued. Do they know which view you prefer? How you take your coffee in the morning? And if there is a problem, it is handled quickly, regardless of the hour.

But how is the hotel’s design making it easy for you to stay—and not so easy for you to leave? It is the 21st century after all and technology is making a strong impact on how hotels accommodate the modern traveller.

Your luxury room will let you stay as connected as you want, offering sizable work spaces and convenient outlets for charging your devices if you need to keep working. But if you are ready to unplug, high-end hotels are letting you grab a remote to do just that. The automation technology that many of us still dream of for our homes (one remote to control lighting, entertainment, temperature and security) is already in place in some luxury hotels, even allowing you to put out a digital “Do Not Disturb” sign while soaking in the tub.

Luxury hotels are equipping rooms with iPads to let guests communicate with the hotel staff, make dinner reservations and simplify the check out process. And for those of us inspired to never leave—we can always book our next stay!

Hotels are our home away from home when we go out to explore the world. For those hotels that are highest ranked in their field, the stay goes beyond a safe place to lay your head and becomes an indulgent experience for the senses and soul. Meticulous design impacts your entire stay and encourages you to guarantee that your last look at the grand lobby on your way out is only until you can get back again—the sooner, the better.

What was the hotel experience that made you want to never leave?
