Best Of, Best Of Best 20 Projects Presented On Freshome In 2011 Modern Design 20 Most Popular Projects Presented On Freshome In 2011 Inspiring Batman Room Freshome 03: 20 Most Popular Projects Presented on Freshome in 2011

our site readers, it is time to draw the line and reminisce about good times this year. On our site, great moments are reflected by absorbing projects, which is why we decided to make a list with our top 20 posts this year, according to your Facebook shares. Have fun going through the photos and remembering the best works that provided inspiration this year. As usual, by clicking on each photo, you can see more pictures and details about the project in question. Enjoy!

#1. In at number one and officially the most popular post in 2011, this tropical island yacht project is a dream come true for its designers, the UK based yacht design company Yacht Island Designs. The floating tropical island is made out of steel and measures 90 meters in length, plenty of room to build a luscious and luxurious environment to sail away in the sunset. A volcano built on the yacht guides water flowing down to the pool, where huts and luscious greenery surround it.

#2. Next, we have a fascinating place of retreat called Ayada Maldives and located on the island of Maguhdhuvaa, in the lovely Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll district. The resort consists of 112 luxurious villas and opened on October 30, 2011.  Impeccable blue waters, powder white sands and lush vegetation- they all seem to be a given in this miniature paradise.

#3. Bali is a small island in Indonesia, a magical place, known worldwide due to its rich culture and mesmerizing landscapes. This is probably why these incredible hanging pools from  Ubud Hanging Gardens Hotel made our list at number one. The most striking of the hotel’s design features is a large, multi-leveled infinity pool, with curves that are said to copy the shape and beauty of the hills nearby.

#4. The astonishing Ibiza in Spain was the perfect place to construct the bright Casa Jondal. Occupying 380 square meters, the residence captures the barrier between Spanish rustic style elements of architecture and modern design elements. Designed by the Catalan architect Jaime Serra from Atlant Del Vent, the Ibiza dream house looks like the perfect residence for an enjoyable lifestyle.

#5. The next post pays tribute to these impressive abandoned Victorian homes built with the help of LEGO bricks. The original idea belongs to Mike Doyle, who not to long ago finished his third collapsing home in this amazing series. According to Laughing Squid, the projects made so far are called Victorian on Mud Heap, achieved with the help of about 110k-130k pieces.

#6. This project highlights your love for photography and witty designs. These ingenious and fun coffee mugs in the shape of camera lens were designed by Photojojo and include a lens-cap lid, rubber-grip focus and zoom rings. The most interesting thing about them? Both Canon and Nikon coffee mugs are available and they are equipped with an easy to clean, heat preserving, stainless steel lining.

#7. With a typical Scandinavian design, yet individualized through original details, this apartment consists of two rooms plus kitchen and is spread over a surface of 81 square meters. It was a pleasant surprise to see this apartment get plenty of Facebook shares. In return, it has the “privilege” of hitting our “best of” list for year 2011.

#8. The Meera House, designed by Guz Architects, is located on the island of Sentosa, in Singapore. It is a daring and original project that features green spaces for every floor of the building. Because of the neighbouring buildings being so close, walls were constructed on each side, protecting the privacy. Each storey has visual or actual access to greenery and the layered effect makes each floor feel like it was a single storey dwelling sitting in a garden.

#9. If you are looking for creative ways to light up a room,  these Gourd Lamps from Calabarte are a good option. Each gourd lamp is made from a gourd brought from Senegal and their exotic design is achieved after carefully selecting dried shells of gourd fruit and drilling patterns into them. And just have a look at that lovely game of light!

#10. Designed by Steve Kuhl, this amazing pirate inspired bedroom accomplishes a dream for pirate enthusiasts of all ages. Ingeniously constructed, the unique bedroom can be accessed by letting go of all fears and becoming a child again: at a superior floor, a hole in the wall takes you sliding down a slide to a comfortable pillow located in the actual bedroom. Once you get up, the eyes immediately rise to meet a wonderful, fairy tale structure: a large pirate ship high on the ceiling.

#11. This project comes from Juliana Santacruz Herrera who decided the streets of Paris were too gloomy and needed a little fresh touch. With these in mind she came up with the concept of decorating the potholes of the city using colorful strips of fabric. Creative, fun and a bit crazy, but we loved this idea just as much as you did.

#12. Having problems when it comes to waking up in the morning? It is our great wicked pleasure to present this creative alarm clock that will surely solve whatever “oversleeping issues” you may have. The design of the money shredding alarm clock is definitely for the strong-hearted, for the rich of for the desperate. Funny and clever, this device will make sure you get to work on time, even if it means compromising the earnings you are about to make that day. If for some money is not a problem, the machine can also shred other important papers, such as holiday airplane tickets, homeworks, “to do” lists and so on.

#13. Next off, here is a Batman-inspired interior in Eden Motel, a true lovers’ nest located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. A king-sized bed, a Bat-mobile, cement-like walls, giant mirrors and of course, generous-sized Batman logos are just a few of the special features this crib has to offer. We found out that this place can be rented by the hour and that it costs 50$ for a three hour block.

#14. The spectacular Leaf House was designed by Mareines + Patalano Arquitetura and is located in Angra dos Reis, close to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Its unique design is said to be inspired by Brazil’s Indian architecture and was envisioned in a way that counteracts the humid and hot climate which characterizes the area. Stretching over a surface of 8,600 square feet, this original looking beach home is covered by a giant leaf-shaped roof that isolates the building:

#15.Richard Clarkson in collaboration with Grace Emmanual, Brodie Campbell, Jeremy Broker, Eamon Moore, Kahlivia Russell and Joya Boerrigter designed a cradle for adults. Designed for maximum relaxation, comfort and calmness, this unusual armchair couldn’t look more appealing.

#16. The PONS + HUOT Offices by French architecture practice Pottgiesser was designed to shelter the headquarters of two companies: Pons and Huot. It is compartmented into two horizontal planes, with a solid oak platform that serves both as ceiling and as desk surface. The four lateral sides feature spaces for archives, cloakrooms and the kitchen. The unique organic arrangement serpents along the interior, creating separate office spaces with an intricate pattern. Transparent Plexiglas domes delimitate each office space. Ficus panda trees with disguised planters offer the feeling of a luscious open space, filled with light and vegetation.

#17. An exact replica of the “Up” house was recently constructed by Bangerter Homes, in Herriman, Utah. And since our site covers all major unconventional architecture projects across the world, this home really got our attention. And judging by your votes, it also got yours. Click on the photo for the original post and a news coverage on the project.

#18. By combining up-cycled, vintage and hand-made, Oregon-based Atomic Attic has created fantastic furniture for your favorite pets. Vintage suitcases and TVs were transformed into fascinating pet furniture that add color and style to your pet’s favorite corner of the house. Just click the photo for the original post and more details.

#19. This next posts features a few street art works that are sure to bring a smile on your face. OaKoAk is a “French artist who likes to play with urban elements”. The result? Cute urban jokes that liven up the gloomy city streets. Apparently the the “Chuck Norris Sat Here” broken bench really caught on and we got a lot of positive feedback from you guys.

#20. Made from over 100,000 toothpicks over the course of 35 years, the “Rolling through the Bay” toothpick sculpture was created by Scott Weaver, an artist who has been building toothpick sculptures since he was 8 years old, back in 1968. The sculpture features four ping-pong balls that take you on a tour across the toothpick city. Click the photo for an amazing video of the project!

Companies such as West Elm and CB2 have developed a whole range of apartment-size sofas and seating for small-space dwellers, and for good reason: The sofa is usually the most space-consuming furniture piece in a home. Opt for sofas that have a shallower depth, 37 inches or less. Skip oversized, rolled arms — which can waste a foot or more of floor space — and pick a modern, streamlined style with thinner arms. Less arm space also means more seating; in fact, an armless sofa or a one-armed chaise is the ultimate space-saving seating solution.

Here’s the catch: San Diego comes with what locals call a “sun tax.” It’s pricey to live in “America’s Finest City” and the surrounding county, and the region perennially ranks among the most expensive in the country. It’s often a landlord’s market on the apartment front, and home prices are well beyond what many locals can afford. Still, millions of people manage to make San Diego their place in the sun. We spent more than 30 hours conducting extensive research on San Diego’s apartments, neighborhoods and residential options. We looked at more than 80 apartment complexes in the San Diego area, categorizing them by location and comparing them with a set list of criteria. Besides basic information such as year constructed, number of units and average rent prices, we factored in community amenities such as outdoor spaces and fitness facilities.
